Stove Pipe Domestic

Another Of Dick Shelly's designs, the Domestic is a side shaft engine with a sheet metal water hopper which gives rise to the "Stove Pipe" moniker. This engine is equipped with spark ignition. The spark is produced via a buzz coil made from an old lawnmower ignition coil and a large relay. The fuel tank is in the hollowed out base. It is shown running here at the West Penn Live Steamers tracksite not long after its completion. The compression on this engine is rather high and it kicks quite a bit when it fires. You see that it is clamped to the table. This is necessary to keep it from "walking away." Another large and heavy engine.
