Virginia Number 1

This Locomotive was the first real machining project I ever built. Plans and castings were purchased from Caldwell Industries and construction soon followed. It was and is a fine performer and was known as "The American Flyer" at the West Penn Live Steamer's track. It is a 1" scale narrow guage engine and is coal fired. LBSC designed it. The boiler is of all copper construction. With a grate area of only about 4.5 square inches, it takes some practice to fire it effectively. It steams the best on Pocohontas coal especially when allowed to run at a good clip and pulling a couple of people. Traction isn't the best on aluminum rail but for such a light weight locomotive it pulls admirably.
